The men of the 21st century take just as long as the women do to get ready. Men's fashion is now just as important as women's. Why is this? What's changed? Is it the metro sexual world we now live in? Or maybe it's the idea of look good, feel good.
90% of my friends happen to be male, and, after a session of deep thought...I realised, every one of them fuss about the way they look, sadly a lot more than I do.
Men's fashion has changed dramatically throughout the ages. From Bowler hats to spandex skin tight leggings, men's fashion is now at its peak. Past styles are being reborn, the colours, styles, patterns and fabrics reappearing down the catwalks. Is that all it is? Old styles spiced up? Why was fashion never so appealing to men then, as it is now?
The military style coat has always been in fashion. The usual favourites of the Indie look are front men like Pete Doherty and Johnny Borrell. But is fashion repeating itself? The military, who wore items which can now only be pulled off by the so called “cool kids” and “Indie heart throbs" was worn by the late 70’s early 80’s post punk band Adam Ant, lead singer of Adam and the Ants. Designers such as Vivienne Westwood and Colin Swift would eventually design the pirate/militant look which The Ants pulled off in the coolest way possible. Did the star know his outrageous anti-fashion statement would become the 2009 autumn craze down the cat walk?
Not only do pieces of clothing fall into the reborn or retro category, but accessories too. Last summer brightly coloured sunglasses hit Topshop., sunglasses which bore great resemblance to the ones Roy Orbison or Bob Dylan proudly wore in the 60’s.
Maybe seeing these feisty, successful men, over the years constantly in the public eye has made the modern man envious. Just a theory, but image is a big factor in today’s society. The fashion world is so much bigger and more powerful than it ever has been; men are spending more money on clothes than ever before. It was once thought that only homosexual men or feminine men had style or care about their image and fashion, but the working men of today are proving these old fashion ideals wrong by looking fabulous and giving the girls a run for their money.
